When LED's are combined with loudspeakers light and sound can be efficiently distributed into an area. Many designs of these Light Speakers can be combined to serve multiple purposes. A Light Emitting Diode (LED) is a solid-state semiconductor device that converts electrical energy directly into light. On a basic level, this semiconductor is comprised of two regions. The p-region which contains positive electrical charges and the n-region which contains the negative electrical charges. If you apply voltage a current begins to flow and electrons move across the n region into the p region. The process of an electron moving through the p-n junction releases energy. The dispersion of this energy produces photons with wavelengths in the visible spectrum.  Because LED's are solid-state lighting  devices they do not contain any parts that can break, rupture, shatter, leak or contaminate the environment. (RoHs compliant) If we used more LED's to replace conventional light sources CO2 emissions would be significantly reduced. LED's exceed Energy Star requirements. They are robust light sources.  They are perfect for low voltage applications.(Safe)  The light emitted can be easily directed to increase the overall system efficiency.  They are able to produce vivid saturated colors without any filters. The small size of LEDs allows them to be tightly mixed together for different lighting effects. They can be digitally controlled and turned on-off at lightning speed. They have extremely long life spans typically + 50,000 hours.  LEDs provide high quality light with superior color rendering that is ideal for product merchandising environments.  Unlike other light sources LED's do not emit UV light which can be harmful to fabrics.

The plots below represent the sound output of a column speaker at different frequency bands.  These balloons represent the directivity of the speaker.  The light emitted by an LED also has directivity.  By carefully selecting the number and type of LEDs it is possible to create a light source that closely emmulates the loudspeakers sound dispersion pattern.  This is just one example of the possibilities of this technology.

A flush mount two way coaxial speaker with a centered LED light.  The light level is adjustable via remote control.  The control unit can be installed in a standard single gang electrical box. Optional transformers allow this speaker to be used in multiples as part of a 70 Volt distributed system. This speaker is shallow enough to fit in a standard stud depth wall. It can be installed in existing buildings or new construction.  The non rusting aluminum grille is paintable and removable.  All speaker mounting can be done from the front so there is no need for access behind the wall or ceiling. Multiple speakers can easily be controlled and integrated into a network.  These speakers and LEDs run on low Voltage so they meet code and are safe to use.  Getting the sound/lighting sources closer to people greatly reduces distortion and increases efficiency.
